I’m pretty sure he would not be so widely known nor have received the Nobel. I say that as a great fan who was lucky enough to be in my formative years when he was producing some of his greatest work. His words and music TOGETHER had an enormous influence on me, but not as much as, eg, John Steinbeck. I’m not sure I was much influenced then by poetry alone though I listened to it read a lot in pubs. Do we come to poetry later than prose or music? Good question Jenny. But I think it’s a good move by the Nobel adjudicators.
I love love love Bob too, just a lil cheeky poem about how much more powerful, even accessible, music can make words 🙂 I think you’re right about the timing in our lives when we appreciate different art forms.
“lil cheeky” it might be but it had me thinking a lot so a great poem! Forgot to mention another substantial influence on me, the original Dylan – Thomas. After being turned off poetry completely by ‘studying’ Milton’s minor sonnets for GCE ‘O’ level the Dylans brought me back.
Haha, that sounds familiar! Ahh Dylan Thomas. I was about 19 when I read anything by him and thought ‘where have you been all this time?!’. Schools have a lot to answer for!
